What do you think about voting contests?

If you’ve been a long time reader of my blog, you’d know I’m an avid sweepstaker and enter a lot of sweepstakes. I rarely, if ever, enter a contest where winning a prize isn’t based on a random draw. I usually don’t have the skill required for the contest, and if I actually do, I’m usually not motivated enough to do what’s required to enter.

The ones I really avoid, though, are the kinds of contests where the winner is determined by the votes of the public and not a panel of judges. I feel like these types of contests end up like a popularity contest and if you don’t have a large group of friends to draw votes from, you don’t stand a chance. I also think these types of contests make it easy for cheaters to win.

I’ve heard too many stories from my blogger friends where they play by the rules in the contests they enter only to have cheaters that use bots to get them to first place.

I groan every time I see a contest that has some awesome prizes I would love to win only to find out the winner is determined by a public vote. It’s hard for me to trust that the organizer of the contest will make sure no one cheats. Of course, I’ll never know either way.

So, it just means a better chance for all that do enter those types of contests because they won’t have me to compete with. Although, when I see some of the prizes, it really is tempting for me to try and give it a shot. I think for now I’ll stick with sweepstakes where winners are chosen randomly. I’ve done pretty well with those. 🙂

What about you? What do you think about these voting (popularity) contests? Do you enter or stay away from these?
